Preparing the water
Preparing your water is important when it comes to cleaning your aquarium, you don't want to be putting toxic or harmful water into your aquarium. First you want to find out how many gallons/liters your aquarium hold, then find what 25% of that is. Once you find out what 25% of that is fill your bucket with that amount. let the water sit for 24-48 hours (longer if your water source contains a lot of harsh chemicals)
For example: if you have a 10 Gallon tank then 2.5 gallons is 25% therefor you need to fill the bucket with 2.5 gallons of water.
How much water do i need to take out?
A lot of people think when you clean your aquarium you empty the entire aquarium. DO NOT DO THAT. Most aquarium pets will die if this is done plus its more work than is actually required. Only 25% of the water should be taken out and changed. So like stated before find out how many gallons your tank is and find what 25% of that is.
Cleaning you tank
So now that you know how to prepare the water and that you know how much water to take out it time to clean your tank. If you are using a siphon this is where the second bucket comes in place. If using a siphon the end of the siphon goes into the bucket to catch the water that is being sucked out, if you are using a aquarium vacuum that attaches to the tap the water goes right down the drain. When you start your cleaning you want to get the waste out first. Start by sucking out all the pop and other waste in the tank by simply going over the waste product allowing it go to be sucked out of the tank. After you get all the waste out and have not taken out 25% of the water then just let the siphon sit in the water until 25% of the water is out. The water you have that you prepared earlier in the bucket is not going to be poured into the tank.
For example: You are cleaning your tank and you get all the waste out. After all the waste is out you realize you only took out 1 gallon of water in total. That means you have to continue to let the siphon or vacuum sit into the water so another 1.5 gallons can leave making it a total of 2.5 (25%) of water was taken out. You then fill the tank with the 2.5 gallons of water you have prepared earlier.
- siphon or aquarium vacuum hose
- 2 buckets ( 1 if aquarium vacuum attaches to tap)
- Clean/fresh source of water
