Requirements & Care
Tank Size:
It's recommended to have at least 10 gallons per adult Axolotl you have. For Example 1 adult Axolotl only requires a 10 gallon tank while 5 adult Axolotl require a 50 gallon tank. Young Axolotl do not require this much space, a smaller tank can be used to house juveniles to make feeding and cleaning easier. As they get bigger you will need to re-home them in a appropriate size tank.
Decor & hides
It's recommended to have at least one hid per Axolotl or one big enough to fit all the Axolotls comfortably. Hides can be plant, castles, rock caves, pipe and anything else your Axolotl can hide in. Any decor is pretty much fine to put in your Axolotl tank as long as it doesn't have something sharp on it that will cut your Axolotl
Substrate:
Sand and bare bottom are the most recommended and commonly used methods. Like mentioned you should only use bare bottom (nothing) on the bottom of your tank, sand, or River rocks that are 3.5 inches or larger (to big to fit in the Axolotls mouth). Pebbles are not recommended because the Axolotl may ingest the pebble while eating leading to impaction which could lead to death of the Axolotl is not able to pass the pebble.
Temperature:
Ideal temperature for Axolotls should be between 10 - 24°c (50 - 75°F). Temperature out of this range for a long period of time can be fatal.
Food:
Food will depend on the age of the Axolotl. This is for Axolotl from 2 inches to full size. Axolotls that are 2-3 inches should be eating chopped blood worms every day. Axolotls that are 4-6 inches can should be eating Blood worms, pellets, chopped earthworms every 2 days. Axolotls that are 6 inches plus should be eating earthworms, blood worms, pellets, feeder fish, live shrimp and other meaty food 2-3 times a week. Axolotl can live on just those foods along but its recommended to have a variety of those foods to keep the Axolotls health in top condition.
